We felt the need to express our encounter with the Consulate General because there are too many people that say they are not helpful. But people need to realize that there are rules and there is only so much that can be done on their side but still they are willing to go above and beyond for everyone! This was honestly and eye opening experience and we want to express our greatest gratitude to all at the Consulate General of Bulgaria at Chicago! There are not enough works to express our thanks!
My mother left Bulgaria for America back in 1994 and had not been back since. That's almost 23 years she had not been back to her home country. On top of this she had not seen her mother (my grandmother) in 17 years. The time finally came where my mother was now able to leave the U.S. and travel back to Bulgaria for a few weeks. So out of excitement we booked two tickets for myself and my mother to travel just a few days later. Unfortunately we did not prepare nor where we informed correctly but all of my mother documentation (passport, drivers license, ext) where expired. We where under the impression that she would be able to travel as long as she has all of her documentation to show even though they where expired. We got a reality check fast. The big day came and we are at O'Hare airport ready to leave. We passed security and about to board. That's when we where stopped. Finding out that she could not travel. Of course we are in a panic and wreck. We spend all this money for tickets and what not and our plane left without us. Not knowing what to do we call the Bulgarian Consulate for immediate help. We spoke to someone at the office and told them that we where at the airport and explained the situation. It was about 4:10 PM on a Wednesday. And mind you that the Consulate closes at 5:00 PM. The person we spoke to was very respectful and extremely helpful. When you think of going to a Consulate, embassy, or government building, you think of the people at the DMV. Very unhelpful and slow. Not in this case! The Consulate General and their staff offer to stay at the office after hours to help process paperwork of an emergency temporary passport! They stayed on the line with us and even called us back to check on the status of where we where and to make sure we got to the office in downtown Chicago okay! They went above and beyond to help us!!! We got there at about 5:30 PM and most of the staff was still there happy to see us! We managed to submit paperwork for the temporary passport, take pictures, fingerprints, and transmit the information to Bulgaria for a decision. Mind you Bulgaria is 8 hours ahead of us. We ended up getting a physical passport the next morning at 8:00AM. They sent people to the office early to meet us so that we can catch the next flight to Bulgaria that same day!
The Consulate General of Bulgaria and their staff are phenomenal! The dedication they have to helping Bulgarian citizens and others in need is outstanding.

PICK UP THE PHONE
So the consulate has 2 phone lines. One for the "business" hours the other for "emergency" after the business hours. Huh? Only for the garbage pond called Bulgaria. In what called themselves civilized society that exists? First nobody is picking up the main line, and when I dialed the "emergency" line the person said, I cant answer you any question now, call the other line. :). I know the govt administration in Bulgaria is illiterate dumb and useless, but I have never expected to face that attitude and manners from the Consulate in Chicago.
