The gift store is amazing! I've bought presents for others (sometimes). On the 2nd floor are tons of art books, designer greeting cards, and a kids wall.
Really enjoyed my visit to the MCA Chicago. The installments were all fascinating as a huge art nerd. Admission was steep, but worth it in the end. Made it through the museum in 5 hours, which is a good clip for one of this size. Didn't stop at the food court, but did look at the prices: wowza - make sure you stop at the ATM if you plan to eat here.
In the permanent collection, one of my favorites is a video of a performance artist who "goes down" on her big toe for almost fifteen (15) minutes. (Clearly, not for everyone.)
Each exhibit takes chances you won't see elsewhere!
I adore this museum. I've been a member since they were at the old location.
I'm sure I've missed some items: Summer Solstice, First Fridays, and the beauty of the building, just to name a few.
I liked it. Nothing blew me away here but for the money this is worth a look. I spent about 2 hours looking at everthing. The people selling tickets to get in mostly appeared too be not that intrested in helping customers. Three ladies sitting at the desk and it took some time before they could help us. Maybe they were busy writing reviews.
Lastly, it was here that I was first introduced me to 'Tom's of Finland.'
The MCA is a must visit in Chicago, and their continual cycle of great shows merit frequent visits. The large main exhibit is always so impressive and the smaller galleries are well arranged and enjoyable too. Suggested entrance fee is more than reasonable for the experience, and there's discounts for student and the option to pay less if you need to. They're not exactly forthcoming about the "suggested" part of it.
Really awesome museum with fun exhibits and a reasonable entrance fee. I spent about 3 hours there and didn't fully see everything so I have to go back and check out the rest! Entrance fee is lower for students which is very helpful and I appreciated it. Very clean and the staff was nice.
They have great after-hours events also. They have live music, kabuki masterworks, and interviews with talented artist. [I may have invented their kabuki performances] I just saw Thurston Moore at a talk there (us Sonic Youth fans are aging … poorly). [But why? Thurston, why?].
I'd like to see more postcard type options at the gift shop, that was always my go to when I was too broke for anything else, and I still like them. They will sometimes have them for the main exhibits, but never anything else. The book selection is very good, and there are all sorts of fun, creative gifts.
