Their partial hospitalization program is very seriously lacking. It seems to be greared towards people that I personally see as bad parents. They suggest that everyone read a book called, "The Explosive Child" which I read years ago. My child left worse than when he started and I actually had management look me in the eye and tell me they don't have the resources to help my child! What are Robert and Ann doing with all of the money? I'm so angry and disappointed!
I consulted with the geneticist in Madison, and he confirmed the symptoms were a complication of the genetic disorder, and then we had the ultimate luck to move to Omaha and had the BEST experience with the Children's Hospital there. Doctors, therapists, and staff all listen and care.
I am still angry at our experience at Lurie's, but am also grateful there are places such as UW Madison Hospital and Children's Hospital in Omaha that have taught me to expect a higher level of care and commitment than I found at Lurie's.
The doctors at Lurie's could have potentially done much more harm to my child, but because of our families experiences we knew to keep looking for answers and care from other providers. When a parent comes to the hospital with a child that's sick, in pain, and hurting, we are looking for answers, not assumptions from medical professionals. And when there are potential underlying issues I would expect to find doctors willing to learn and understand what's going on. Instead I found professionals who didn't listen, were unwilling to learn, and who were harmful, not helpful.
Best hospital! Best doctors! Best nurses! Best staff! Especially ER, Hematology and Oncology!
Fast forward to us being placed in the care of an ENT with Lurie’s. I went for the initial appointment and it was recommended that we do a bronchoscopy and the doctor talked about possibly doing a chest CT. I was told to think about it. I called back and decided I would like to do both of the tests, and spent two weeks trying to get a hold of the nurse who never ever called me back from that office. In the meantime, they already canceled my sons original procedure and rescheduled for another day. When I finally was able to get a hold of somebody, they told me they could not do both the same day because they had just gotten booked, even though I have been calling for two weeks. In the meantime, I already switched my schedule once for the procedures and was looking forward to having them done so I could have some answers for my son. Yesterday, I spent hours on the phone with the surgical coordinator, the office manager, and somebody else from patient relations trying to figure out why my calls where never answered and why they couldn’t accommodate me after ignoring my calls for two weeks. One of the answers I received was people have been in and out of the office. In my opinion, if people are in and out of the office, they to put that on their voicemail and direct you to somebody who is in the office.
Needless to say, the lack of communication and poor communication is shocking. This leaves a parent with serious questions about how their child will be cared for which I did not expect from Luries. Part of good care is communication and making families feel as though they are in good hands and I have note felt that at all.
This review is really a review of communication at the hospital and its facilities, rather than care. I waited a very long time to get my son in to see Dr. Chung in pulmonology. I was very much looking forward to our appointment. The actual appointment was fine, but then Dr. Chung left and sent a nurse to review things with me. I had not had a chance to ask questions to Dr. Chung so I asked her to come back in. She gave me a list of follow-up items I needed to do, without any indication of how I do those items or who I follow up with. She told me to ask at the front desk before I left. I did this, and they also had no idea. So I spent a long time trying to schedule additional appointments that my son needed without the help of anybody at this particular office. I scheduled exactly what was on the sheet, and after I had done the test, I received a call from the nurse wondering why I didn’t do a swallow study. Well, a swallow study was not listed on Dr. Chung‘s list that was handed to me. I feel as though if I was spent a little bit more time with, we could have gotten all the tests done at my son needed.
The initial consultation appointment we've been waiting for Two Months. To make the second appointment for the therapy I called at least Five times and always ended up being transferred to the hospital's general number. And someone on the phone "Was always making sure to give me a call back". And Finally, after One Month, I received a call to make an appointment and it was scheduled an almost a Month ahead. So Four Month required to get the Therapy for my baby. It's NOT Acceptable in terms of Child's Health or is it the way children are treated by this hospital?
I have waited three years to post this review, but wanted to write about our experience, especially after reading some of the experiences posted by others. My child was a patient at Lurie's almost three years ago, and the neurology dept. completely failed us in their rush to diagnose and dismiss her symptoms. My child has an "invisible disease," a genetic condition she was born with. The doctors were completely unfamiliar with the condition and would not research or learn about it as it related to the symptoms she was experiencing in the hospital. Instead of listening and understanding, they labeled and judged the symptoms to be caused by anxiety and a need for attention. They had my child consult with a psychologist on staff who was both kind and caring. After speaking with my child, the psychologist told me whatever was happening with my daughter was in her body, not her head. Lurie's doctors are limited by their own experiences, and don't realize it. The arrogance and rush to judgement shocked me.
