Lena Brava is a very cool, very hip restaurant to check out that does offer a good selection of gluten free items (although the menu online doesn't show that).
The food here is unbelievable. The striped bass presentation is beautiful. I definitely recommend going and trying this experience for yourself.
However, the entrees did not match the quality of the apps in our opinion. We had the black cod and short rib dishes and a couple sides and nothing blew us away or stood out. The fish was probably our favorite item, while the short ribs, brussel sprouts and potatoes were a bit lackluster.
While I'm happy we gave the place a shot and had a good night, I was not as satisfied walking out as I expected.
Was unfortunately disappointed with Leña Brava. I've been wanting to check the place out for a while, I'm a fan of Rick Bayless and was excited by the live-fire cooking concept. The place is cool and smells incredible when you walk in. Service was friendly and helpful. When our entrees took longer than expected a manager brought us a scallion dish to apologize for the wait.
We tried a number of dishes and, overall, enjoyed everything. That being said, I will say some of the food was very hit or miss. I'm not sure if it was an off night or what, but the flavor combos of a couple dishes we tried were just...wrong. Everything else was fantastic, so I still recommend checking it out. I also believe the menu has changed a bit since we were there, as it looks like some of what we had is no longer available.
Fresh take on haute Mexican cuisine with a delicious, colorful, exceptionally presented, texture laden menu and inventive, masterfully-crafted cocktails. This restaurant is world-class and a must-visit West Loop gem!
Food was great, but Rick Bayliss happened to be in the restaurant when we were there and I do judge an owner, especially one who is actively doing things to achieve some level of celebrity, for not taking the opportunity to at least check in with a few customers to see how their experience was and thank them for coming in. I did not care that he did not stop by our table, but we saw him come in, talk to one of his managers for 10-15 min, go back to the kitchen, and then leave. Maybe he was just in a rush that night, but no matter how busy you are, it just seems like the right thing to do for an owner to pop by a couple tables to say hello and thank you.
The menu is broken up between ICE and FIRE. The ice side is mostly appetizers and salads. We ordered a ceviche, laminados and a salad to start. The apps were great, fresh and tasty with just the right amount of heat. They paired perfectly with the mezcal based cocktails.
